Leaders of Egypt, Eritrea, Somalia meet amid regional tensions
The leaders of Egypt, Eritrea and Somalia met for a three-way summit in Asmara on Thursday against a backdrop of heightened tensions in the Horn of Africa region. The maritime agreement infuriated Mogadishu and highlighted regional rivalries as relations soured between Ethiopia and neighbouring Somalia as well as Egypt. Mohamud, who has already visited Eritrea several times, held separate talks with Isaias shortly after his arrival late Wednesday, the ministry said. It is his first visit to Asmara although Isaias has visited Egypt on several occasions. Relations between Addis Ababa and Asmara have also been deteriorating recently, even though Eritrean troops backed Ethiopian government forces in the brutal 2020-2022 war against Tigrayan rebels.

In a joint statement delivered on 10 October at the 57th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, the nations acknowledged some positive developments while highlighting persistent challenges across the country. The countries also called for all parties to adhere to the provisions of the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement in Tigray, stating that “compliance with this agreement is crucial for lasting peace.”While recognizing Ethiopia’s adoption of a Transitional Justice Policy, the nations urged the government to ensure a “credible, victim-centred, transparent and independent transitional justice process” in line with international standards. The group called on Ethiopian authorities to “take advantage to the fullest extent of the technical assistance available” from the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, emphasizing the need for continued monitoring and reporting on the situation.

Somalia, Eritrea and Egypt pledge to bolster security ties
The three leaders agreed to improve regional stability as Somalia battles with the al-Shabab armed group. The presidents of Somalia, Eritrea, and Egypt have agreed to boost cooperation for regional security amid heightened tensions in the Horn of Africa. In a statement released by the Eritrean information ministry, the three leaders agreed to bolster ties and improve regional stability, and the “unequivocal respect for the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of the countries of the region”. For years, Egypt and Ethiopia have been in dispute over Addis Ababa’s construction of a vast hydroelectric dam on the Nile River. The meeting comes amidst rising tensions between Somalia and Ethiopia over Ethiopia’s illegal maritime agreement with Somaliland, a breakaway region of Somalia. Somalia is preparing to determine the composition of its upcoming AU Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) following the expiration of the current mission. Egypt, Somalia and Eritrea close ranks to stem Ethiopia's expansionism
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al Sisi arrived today in Asmara, Eritrea, to meet with Eritrean President Isasias Afwerki. Egypt, according to the same source, also reiterated its opposition to Ethiopia's military presence on the Red Sea. In addition to the common Ethiopian threat, the thaw in relations between Cairo and Mogadishu's historic ally: Turkey, has also brought the positions of Egypt and Somalia closer. A thaw that was sanctioned by the recent visit to Ankara by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al Sisi (the first since 2014). The talks between Egypt and Eritrea follow a surprise visit to Asmara in August by Egyptian intelligence chief Kamal Abbas, who is very close to President Al Sisi, accompanied by Foreign Minister Abdelatty.

Rare Ethiopian Beta Israel Sacred Texts to be Released Online by National Library of Israel
Photo Credit: Michael ZekriThe National Library of Israel (NLI), the Ethiopian Jewry Heritage Center, and the Orit Guardians program at Tel Aviv University, have announced a new digitization project to scan and make available the rare holy books and manuscripts of the Beta Israel community. Until now, most of these items were held by the community’s Kesim (clergy) in private homes, or in Beta Israel synagogues, but were not accessible to the public at large. Scanning is being conducted jointly by NLI and the Ethiopian Jewry Heritage Center. It was donated by the Beta Israel to the Library in 2016. Naftali Avraham, Director General of the Ethiopian Jewry Heritage Center, says that documenting and preserving the Ethiopian Jewish bookshelf is one of the Center’s primary objectives.
