Election 2024: the Sligo-Leitrim constituency is largely unchanged despite the radical surgery done elsewhereOutgoing TDs: Marian Harkin (Ind); Martin Kenny (SF); Marc MacSharry (Ind – retiring); Frank Feighan (FG)Who are the candidates running in the Sligo-Leitrim constituency? Another constituency that is largely unchanged despite the radical surgery done elsewhere. The retirement of former Fianna Fáil TD (now independent) Marc MacSharry provides the only possibility for significant change. It’s a good weathervane here of how impactful Independent Ireland will be in these elections. This is another constituency with minimal changes, despite radical surgery elsewhere.

Large turnout for public meeting opposing Athlone refugee accommodation projectThere was a large turnout at a public meeting in Athlone's Radisson Blu Hotel on Tuesday night, which was organised in opposition to plans to accommodate 1,000 male asylum seekers on a site in the Lissywollen areaApproximately 300 people were in attendance at the meeting, which was organised by a group called Athlone Stands Together. Athlone Mayor Cllr Frankie Keena was among those who addressed the gathering and he told the Westmeath Independent there was a lot of annoyance and concern in the air on the night. "I've always stated that Athlone has opened its doors down through the years to help migrants coming into the town. "The people of Athlone stood together to raise their concerns about the ongoing work for the new IPA (international protection applicant) centre currently being built within Athlone." On its 'Athlone Stands Together' Facebook page, the group said it would be organising a peaceful protest outside the Lissywollen site, starting from tomorrow (Friday).

OPINIONThe question, even just eight years ago, that everybody had about Ireland was ‘would they ever beat the All Blacks?’. Now, they have done it five times, and the question is how long before they become the biggest brand in world rugby – bigger, more commercially powerful and successful than the All Blacks? My answer is probably 10 years, certainly within 20 for the simple reason that Ireland aren’t selling a rugby team to the world, they are selling themselves. And here lies the problem for New Zealand Rugby – it’s selling a rugby team to the world, one that comes with its own highly-defined values, but its identity is distinct and different to that of New Zealand. How are Kiwis presenting themselves to the world via rugby and the All Blacks?

Jessica MageeA 26-year-old man has been jailed for people smuggling after he helped a friend get into Ireland earlier this year in breach of immigration regulations. The court heard that Ahmetay and his friend, both from Albania, were stopped by gardaí at Terminal One, Dublin Airport after they arrived on a flight from Italy. Garda Pat Murry told Marc Thompson Grolimund BL, prosecuting, that Ahmetay’s friend gave a false name and produced a false Bulgarian passport. Both men were interviewed separately, and the first man told gardaí he was an old school friend of Ahmetay’s and was seeking entry into the State under a false passport. The court heard Ahmetay had achieved good GSCE results and had a number of FETAC awards in technology and applied science.

Heat-related hazards led to more than half of all weather and climate-related deaths in the last five years, a new report has said. The State of Climate Services report from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) explores the current state of play and also documents the progress that has been made in the last five years. However, heat-related hazards became the leading cause of death, accounting for 57% of the total reported weather, water, and climate-related deaths globally. Too few nations are creating tailored climate services, and there are still significant gaps in the coverage of observing networks in least developed countries and small island developing states. Provisionally, Wednesday's highest temperature from all 25 primary stations was recorded at Phoenix Park, Dublin, with 19.2C.

Ireland v New Zealand talking points: Andy Farrell’s side keen to right wrongsBy Ed Elliot, PA, DublinIreland launch their Autumn Nations Series fixtures with Friday evening’s mouthwatering clash against New Zealand. The All Blacks, who knocked Andy Farrell’s men out of last year’s Rugby World Cup, arrive in Dublin on the back of a 24-22 win against England. Aside from that agonising 28-24 quarter-final defeat in Paris, Ireland have had New Zealand’s number during the Farrell era. While victory on Friday evening cannot make up for the heartbreak suffered at Stade de France, Ireland will be eager to right some wrongs. Head coach Robertson, who replaced Ian Foster after the Kiwis finished runners-up at the World Cup, has been forced into two changes.
