Ireland has agreed to an EU funding mechanism to provide immediate financial support to Ukraine, which is trying to maintain “essential state functions” at a time of intensified Russian attacks. The Department of Finance published a document, including an EU explanatory memorandum, for the Oireachtas on establishing a new financial system, capable of supplying up to €35bn to Ukraine. The EU explanatory memorandum said that in light of “escalating Russian aggression” it is necessary to act swiftly to ensure Ukraine has access to the resources it “urgently needs”. It said the scheme is “designed to signal to Russia that there continues to be widespread practical and financial support to Ukraine’s economy as it continues to defend itself". The department said it consulted with the Department of Foreign Affairs, Department of the Taoiseach, and the Department of Defence.

But there could well be time when Gissing becomes a by-word in the lexicon of natural flood defences — not just in the UK but elsewhere in the world. The work was carried out by the River Waveney Trust (RWT) and Norfolk Rivers Trust (NRT) in collaboration with WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) and — interestingly — the home insurance giant, Aviva. “In Gissing, the natural flood management intervention designed by the River Waveney Trust and Norfolk Rivers Trust faced its first significant test during the arrival of Storm Babet in 2023. Since this installation at Gissing, no flooding has been reported despite the arrival of eight named storms since, including Storm Babet. Picture: Norfolk Rivers Trust“They approached us and asked if we would take a look at Gissing, which we did,” she said.

The study from the University of Galway said the “treatment gap” for the bone disease is much wider than originally thought. The research involved analysis of case studies of more than 5,000 men and women referred to the Galway University Hospital osteoporosis service. “Overprescribing in low-risk people has led to a false impression – an ecologic fallacy – that the treatment gap that we have for osteoporosis patients in Ireland is actually quite small,” said Prof Carey. “A national osteoporosis programme would help address these anomalies, reduce waste and harm for the patient and improve treatment for those most likely to benefit. Prof Carey said researchers found that calcium and vitamin D are being widely prescribed and overused in the mistaken belief that they are a treatment for osteoporosis.
