Children can 'meet a pilot' in Edenderry Library next weekA 'meet a pilot' event for children under the age of 12 will take place in Edenderry Library next week. Pilot Lorna Bagnall will talk to the children about her chosen career when she visits the library on Thursday, August 15, at 11am. The library can be contacted at: (046) 9731028. The 'meet the pilot' event is part of a summer series which has been giving local children a chance to meet with people working in various occupations, including a Garda, a firefighter and a nurse. A 'meet the librarians' event is also being planned and will take place the following Thursday, August 22, at 11am.

High Street lenders must improve their crisis plans to prepare for a potential collapse, the Bank of England said yesterday. Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds and Standard Chartered were among those told that they need to be more prepared for a potential failure. Standard Chartered was singled out as having a ‘shortcoming’ in its proposal to plan for the execution of its identified restructuring options. Threadneedle Street also identified that Standard Chartered, Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds and Virgin Money UK had ‘areas for further enhancement’. The Bank’s executive director Ruth Smith said: ‘The findings provide ongoing reassurance a major bank could enter resolution safely if needed.

Gushing money: Aramco's dividends have been growing at an annual pace of roughly 30%Saudi Aramco confirmed it will pay more than $124billion in dividends this year as the oil giant warned the market was underestimating the demand for oil. Amin Nasser, chief executive of the world’s largest oil company, said: ‘We continue to be surprised on the upside in terms of demand. We see it from all markets in spite of what’s happening in the energy transition.’Aramco’s dividends have been growing at an annual pace of roughly 30 per cent, putting it on track for a record annual payout of $124.2billion. Rival ExxonMobil returned $32.4billion to shareholders in dividends and buybacks for 2023. Aramco’s financial results showed its net income for the three months to the end of June fell to $29billion, down from $30billion a year earlier.

Investment giant Blackrock, meanwhile, has lifted its holding in Bank of Ireland to just over 9pc from almost 8.8pc. Last week, Bank of Ireland – whose CEO is Myles O’Grady – announced that it had made a €1.1bn pre-tax profit in the first half of 2024. The State sold the last of its shares in Bank of Ireland in 2022. The bank is at a disadvantage compared with bigger rivals AIB and Bank of Ireland in the mortgage market. Bank of Ireland upgraded its earnings guidance for 2024 on the back of its first-half results.

A US federal judge has ruled that Google spent billions of dollars on exclusive deals to maintain an illegal monopoly on search. The proceedings will now enter a second phase in which the court will determine what remedies Google needs to take. The second Google trial is set to begin next month. In one victory for Google, the judge found that it did not have monopoly power in the search advertising market as plaintiffs had alleged. Shares of Google parent Alphabet were down more than 4 per cent on Monday amid a broad sell-off in US markets.

David RaleighGardaí have launched a murder investigation after an elderly woman was found dead in her home in Nenagh, Co Tipperary, on Sunday. The victim was named locally as Josephine “Joan” Ray, aged 89. “It is a murder investigation, we are happy to classify it as that now,” said a senior Garda source. Details of how Ms Ray was killed were being kept under wrap by the Garda investigation team for “operational reasons”. However, a senior Garda source said while the murder investigation was at an early stage, gardaí did not believe any weapon was used.

If any Scottish reader thinks that I am exploiting the current situation to make a narrow, sectarian point, I would ask them to consider the following questions. When the rioters describe themselves as British nationalists, do you believe they speak for, or represent, you or your interests? If he does decide to come to Scotland, he may find the welcome is not what he expects or is used to receiving in other parts of the UK.

Police came under sustained attack and the victim of a suspected hate crime is in a serious condition in hospital after violence in Belfast on Monday night. The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said at one stage petrol was poured over a police Land Rover and set alight.
