In the actual text, meanwhile, Bloom is merely repelled by the sights and smells of men eating meat. The company behind the Burton hotel plan is called Lucky Park Ltd. And sure enough, the old Burton did often take out small ads in this newspaper, one of which shouted “Oysters! As for the old Burton, it was on the way out when Bloom pushed in the door. Another Irish Times small ad, in September 1905, announced it would shortly be the subject of an “administratrix sale”.

But if the darkest hour is just before dawn, then the sun was about to appear again for Trump. He urged them to end the filibuster rule - predicting that Democrats would do so whenever they return to power. Photograph: Saul Loeb/AFP via GettyIn addition, Republican cohesion had begun to show signs of weakening as Trump gathered Republican senators for a breakfast meeting last week. It was defeated when two Democratic senators, Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema, voted against their party to preserve the tool of obstruction. Trump referenced that failed vote when he predicted that the Democrats would themselves end the filibuster if and when they return to power.

In the battle for hearts and minds, the question of a united Ireland is nearly all heart and too little mind. A united Ireland is both deeply desired and consigned to Irish dreamtime. Not one of those two thousand involves a united Ireland. I recently did a piece of work for the ARINS Project and the Royal Irish Academy, a short book called For and Against a United Ireland. There is and will be plenty of emotion – many people on the island know exactly how they feel about a united Ireland.

The cost of any licence cannot be passed on to consumers as retailers have no discretion as to the price they charge for tobacco products. Photograph: Bryan O'BrienA retailers group has claimed in the High Court that the then-Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly introduced exorbitant new licensing fees for selling tobacco products which were just “plucked out of the air”. Under the new licensing system, due to come into operation next February, retailers will have to pay a total fee of €1,800 to sell tobacco products and nicotine inhaling products, or €1,000 for tobacco alone or €800 for nicotine products alone. The cost of any licence cannot be passed on to consumers as retailers have no discretion as to the price they charge for tobacco products. The minister denies the claims and said it has been government policy over many years to disincentivise retailers from selling tobacco products and nicotine inhaling products.

Counsel for the NMBI said the nurse had failed to respect the privacy and dignity of the patient and his family. Stock photograph: Getty ImagesA nurse has admitted to professional misconduct for taking a photo of a surgical team carrying out an organ retrieval procedure in an operating theatre and later posting it on social media. Counsel for the NMBI, barrister William Martin-Smith, said the nurse had also failed to respect the privacy and dignity of the patient and his family. It heard that the photo from the operating theatre with the caption “organ retrieval” allowed one male theatre nurse to be identified, although emojis covered the faces of other staff. Mr Martin-Smith said the photos were taken down from social media within nine hours of the nurse being asked to remove them.

Irish is not only a living vessel of our culture and history, but an official and working language of the EU. If anything, visitors to the Áras ought to be more inclined to question the absence of the Irish language than its presence in the home of the Irish president. Photograph: Henrik Egede-Lassen/Zoomedia/PA WireData critical for tracking weather systems affecting Ireland is incomplete, but the body tasked with gathering it is facing a funding crisis, the Cop30 climate summit heard. The Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) warned that the loss of the US as a key funder was putting its work in jeopardy. That work includes improving understanding of the increasingly volatile Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), the system of ocean currents responsible for keeping Ireland’s climate unusually mild for a country positioned so far north. Opinions differ on how dramatically and how soon the change could happen and GCOS members warned more data was urgently needed. “It’s taking essential data from deep in the ocean to the top of the atmosphere and everything in between,” he said.

Photograph: Alex Wroblewski/AFP via Getty ImagesOn Friday, the Abbey Theatre will host a symposium on the current state of arts criticism. The keynote address on Friday, from The Guardian’s Arifa Akbar, will ask whether the art of criticism is facing a crisis. The traditional review format remains useful for some artforms but sits awkwardly with others. The traditional review, with its blend of description, verdict and a bit of history, still has a place, but a less prominent one. At the same time, the traditional review, despite all the obituaries, retains a grip on the imagination in a way arid academic analysis never will.
