It was old stone rubble walls and no insulation in the cavity walls in the 1960s extension,” Higgins says. They are now a family of five and this latest generation of the Higgins family is fully enmeshed in the local community. Higgins and Fallon gelled so well that the construction engineer has since worked with Joe Fallon Design on numerous projects. Members of the Warao group of indigenous people left their homes in Venezuela after commercial deforestation made their lives impossible. The Taoiseach and Gardenia Cooper, a member of the Warao indigenous people, who live along the rivers of Venezuela’s rainforests. It also illustrates the link between environmental degradation, climate change and involuntary migration, a connection the Taoiseach was keen to make. She describes herself as a daughter of the forest, held in the forest’s embrace. Without forest there is no oxygen, so all of us here on this planet need to find a way to protect the forest.”

Split Rock Lighthouse, which is lit each year for about two hours and 15 minutes to honour the lives of the men who died aboard the Edmund Fitzgerald. It is estimated there are about 500 shipwrecks scattered across Lake Superior alone, whose dimensions run a scarcely fathomable 563km in length and 240km in width. The 729ft ore boat Edmund Fitzgerald, shown in a 1972 file photo, apparently sank with all hands on board during a storm that kicked up 25ft waves on Lake Superior. A provocative piece, the work had been used, with its artist’s permission, on an anti-nuclear-power poster in the 1970s. “It’s the notion of an embryo needing to be protected from the environment by having a gas mask,” Finucane says. In subsequent decades, he was largely forgotten by the art world, his work left to gather dust. He drew from images ripped from newspapers – a practice forbidden at art college – and would etch on bread paper, the thin tissue used to wrap loaves. “Very optimistic.”Donal O’Sullivan: An Artist Remembered, by Paul Finucane and Brendan Lyons, is published by Red Barn; it is available from cnocbuiarts.ie/publications and selected bookshops

Rian Farrell was likely caught unawares this week when carving his name into the long annals of Irish athletics history. In registering with North Sligo AC, Farrell helped grow the Athletics Ireland club membership to 75,000 and it’s already tipped beyond that. Athletics, like many sports, also suffered a significant drop off in club membership during Covid-19. As, in turn, were most of the athletics clubs. A kid at that age could also be on the waiting list for a few different athletics clubs.

Donohoe had long wanted to attend trials but was unaware of how easy it was to come and go to court cases. His own interest in court cases stems from an interest in human psychology. This, in part, encouraged Donohoe’s interest in criminal cases. Attending trials and discussing them with others is a stimulating social outlet, Nolan notes, and the group has gathered for social occasions outside of the Central Criminal Court. Donohoe believes that the courts “are a great way to pass the time”, while Drennan Hennessy says it “keeps your brain active”.

A new term, “climate change sceptics”, came into existence, and a group of them were soon invited into the Oval Office to meet Bush.
