Kenya’s Local Organizing Committee (LOC) Chairperson Nicholas Musonye has suggested that the 2027 CAF African Cup of Nations (AFCON), which Kenya is set to co-host alongside Tanzania and Uganda, could ideally be postponed owing to security concerns surrounding the country’s impending general elections. Follow our WhatsApp channel for more newsMusonye’s remarks come in the wake of a report published on Wednesday, 11 February, by The Guardian, a British newspaper, which indicated that the tournament could face postponement amid concerns that the three East African host nations may not yet be fully prepared to stage Africa’s premier football spectacle. However, speaking to AFP, the Kenyan LOC chair emphasized that shifting the tournament to 2028 would better suit Kenya’s national calendar, particularly as the country prepares for general elections scheduled for August 2027. “We’ve seen the volatile atmosphere around elections in Tanzania, Uganda, and even in Kenya. Security would not be guaranteed for such a big competition as the African Cup of Nations,” Musonye stated.

Television operators in Tirana held a symbolic protest today at the Tirana Courthouse. This reaction came after the incident on Tuesday when their colleague, the operator of News24, Aldo Kashri was injured during the national protest organized by the Democratic Party. During the February 10 protest, Aldo Kashri was engulfed in flames caused by the throwing of Molotov cocktails while he was on a television vehicle filming developments on the ground. Thanks to the immediate reaction of his colleagues, more serious consequences were avoided, while he suffered minor burns on his hands. The event has brought back into focus the issue of the safety of journalists and field operators, especially during protests and tense situations, prompting reactions and calls for more protection for media workers.

Liverpool’s defensive rebuild has begun, but that doesn’t mean everyone needs to be replaced. Speculation over the future of Ibrahima Konate is understandably rife, with the Frenchman into the final six months of his deal at Anfield. When Liverpool announced a £60 million deal that would bring Jeremy Jacquet to Merseyside in the summer, many supporters believed that Konate’s time at Anfield was finished, but the 26-year-old proved once again on Wednesday why he deserves a new deal. Van Dijk was also full of praise for his defensive parter, calling Konate’s performance ‘outstanding’ when speaking to TNT Sports at full-time. Konate’s great performances are even more impressive when you consider the recent tragic passing of his father, and the Frenchman has shown great character to maintain his high standard of play throughout such a difficult time.
