The Cabinet, which met in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, cancelled all agreements signed with related government agencies, entities, and regional administrations to safeguard the nation’s unity, territorial integrity, and constitutional order. According to a statement issued on Monday, the terminated agreements are related to cooperation at the ports of Berbera, Bosaso, and Kismayo in northern and southern Somalia, citing evidence that the UAE has taken steps to undermine Somalia’s political independence. “This decision is in response to reports of strong evidence of serious steps being taken to undermine the sovereignty, national unity, and political independence of the country,” said the Cabinet. The ministers further revoked all existing bilateral pacts between Mogadishu and the UAE, including agreements on security and defense. Roots Party leader George Wajackoyah. /FILERoots Party leader George Wajackoyah has assessed the Gen Z movement whose emergence in mid-2024 significantly altered Kenya’s political trajectory and precipitated the formation of a broad-based government. Wajackoyah said that while Gen Z activists earned legitimacy through the substance of the issues they raised, the political change they desire can only be realised through participation in the electoral process. The Gen Z revolt erupted in June 2024 at the height of parliamentary debate on the now-impugned Finance Bill, 2024, which proposed a raft of tax measures widely viewed as punitive. The truce eased tensions, but Gen Z activists have since maintained what they describe as silent protests, vowing to make the Ruto administration a one-term government.

The deal commits Kenya to share pathogen data with the US within one day of any discovery. This has raised concerns among health policy experts about how pathogen data and genetic sequence information could be shared outside the WHO framework. “If American institutions use Kenyan pathogen data to develop high-value products, what benefits are guaranteed to flow back to Kenya? Broadly, the Kenya–United States deal is about replacing the health funding previously channelled through the now-defunct Usaid system. The US is slowly reducing its health funding through AFGHS and wants countries like Kenya to take over most of the costs.

President Yoweri Museveni speaks during an interview at the National Leadership Institute (NALI) in Kyankwanzi district, Uganda, December 4, 2021. [Reuters]Yoweri Museveni has been president longer than most Ugandans have been alive, and shows no sign of giving up his place among the world's longest-serving leaders. Shortly after Museveni took power in 1986, ending years of bloodshed and chaos under murderous tyrants, the young president mused that leaders overstaying their welcome lay at the heart of Africa's problems. His genial demeanour and penchant for folksy parables belie a past as a wily guerrilla fighter and ruthless political survivor.
