Liberia: President Weah Submits Anti Money Laundering Bill to Legislature for Passage
CAPITOL HILL, MONROVIA – Liberia’s Chief Executive, President George Weah on Tuesday submitted before the Legislature for enactment into law an anti-money laundering bill. The bill is seeking to repeal the existing ‘Anti Money Laundering and Financing Act of 2012’. I, therefore, your kind and timely consideration to enact into law this important legislation” the President pleaded with the lawmakers. ‘Existing Weak Law’The crafter of the existing law had hope that it would have been an antidote for money laundering and other widespread financial crimes including the illegal accumulation of wealth and financing terroristic activities. However, despite the law and the act creating the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), there are reports of widespread money laundering activities in the country.

Liberia: TRANSCO CLSG Powers Transmission Lines to Liberia; Set to Commission Sub-stations
He added that three out of five substations in Liberia, including Yekepa, Buchanan and Mount Coffee substations have been completed and fully energized by TRANSCO CLSG. Liberia: Land Title Authorities Overwhelmed By Disputes following Land Rights Act

Bong County Superintendent, Madam Esther Walker told reporters that she cannot remember a land dispute in that area of Bong County because she is so overwhelmed with many land dispute cases. “I have over six files on my desk regarding land disputes, that I cannot remember this particular area. But when reporters queried the Land Authority Commissioner for Land Dispute, Kula Jackson, he said he was unaware of a land dispute in that part of Bong country. But because of this land issue that has brought noise between us, none of these things can’t happen again,” says Madame Weefah.

Liberia: FOHRD Releases National Human Rights Situation Report
Monrovia — The Foundation for Human Rights Defense International (FOHRD) on June 2, 2021, launched its first National Human Rights Report. According to FOHRD, that was the beginning of a journey intended for the advancement of Liberia’s democracy in the protection of the human rights of everyone found within the borders of the country. FOHRD added that the Liberian Government takes appropriate actions to ensure that rape cases across the country are immediately investigated and perpetrators are brought to justice. Liberia: House Passes Special Budget 2021 at US$342.1 Million as Road, Health, Education Top Priority List
MONROVIA – The House of Representatives on Tuesday passed the Special Budget for Fiscal Year 2021 in the tone of US$342,186,000. The House took the decision following the recommendation of its Joint Committee on Ways, Means and Finance, and Public Accounts and Expenditure contained in its report read in Plenary. The Committee said after a vigorous and thorough scrutiny of the budget as submitted to the Legislature in the tone of US$301.549 million, it identified an additional US$40.6 million, summing the budget to US$342,186,000. of the extra US$,40,636,000, additional revenue will from the SOEs accounts for US$8,000 of which the LiMA will contribute US$500,000, LPRC: US$2,500,000, NPA: US$2 million, LTA: US$1 million and the National Road Fund: US$2 million. Locked Behind Closed DoorsPrior to the House’s decision, the lawmakers locked themselves up behind closed doors for hours.

Liberia: Senator Dillon Admits Lying about Flying Economy Ticket to America; Apologizes to Supporters
Now, as can be seen from the screenshot of my Electronic Ticket, I purchased ECONOMY class seat from Monrovia to America. During the flight, I walked over to chat with a foreign friend in the business class section of the plane. The confirmation number showed that the Senator flew Class Z also known as Delta One after upgrading his ticket. Z is the discounted Business class fare. The Senator is on record for criticizing officials of the CDC-led government for wasteful spending including flying business class and other luxury at the expense of taxpayers.

Liberia: Senate Instructs Cancellation of Eton, Ebomaf Financing Agreements
The ETON Financing Road Agreement will also cover Western Liberia counties including the Tubmanburg to Bopolu -52km road in Bomi and Garpolu Counties while the Medina and Robertsport-41.3km road in Bomi and Gbarpolu Counties. It includes the 185km road from Zwedru in Grand Gedeh County to Greenville in Sinoe County. At one point, President Weah labeled media entities and individuals who criticized the loan agreements as enemies of the state. In January, the chairperson of the Senate Committee on Rules, Order and Administration, Senator Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence craved the indulgence of the Senate for the cancellation of the financing agreements between Eton Finance PTE Ltd, and the EBOMAF SA. “It is important to note that unless the two agreements are canceled, they stand to be legal and binding on Liberia,” she stated.

Maritime Boss Says Increase In Piracy At The Guinea Gulf Places Liberia at Risk
MONROVIA – The Commissioner-General of the Liberia Maritime Authority (LiMA), Lenn Eugene Nagbe, says the increase in piracy along the Guinea Gulf poses a serious risk to Liberia and its citizens. Mr. Nagbe pointed out that a vessel flying the Liberian flag was early this week attacked by suspected Iranian operatives. According to him, several Liberians are currently training at the Regional Maritime University (RMU) in Accra, Ghana, while recruitment is ongoing for the second batch of training here at the Liberia Maritime Institute (LMI). Liberia: No Money For Biometric Voter Registration
Madam Davidetta Browne-Lansanah chairperson of the National Election Commission (NEC), however, maintained that the budget is realistic due to the introduction of the Biometric Voter Registration and its pilot project and the establishment of 14 magistrate offices. The National Elections Commission has set-up a committee headed by Commissioner Kpangbai to figure out how the NEC can use the appropriate data from the NIR. The NEC it will in the last half of 2021, need US$4M for the Biometric Voter Registration pilot project. In a communication to both Senate and House of Representatives, the NEC said the total amount projected is for biometric system to conduct voters’ registration and elections. He also suggested that the Legislature allocate certain amount in each annual budget as of now in readiness for the 2023 presidential and legislative elections.

Liberia: Center for Peace Education Donates COVID-19 Items to Motorcyclists, Marketers in Moulton Corner Community
BREWERVILLE- A local nongovernmental organization, the Center for Peace and Education on Saturday distributed several anti-COVID-19 materials to residents of Mouton Corner in Brewerville. The items include 2,000 nose masks, 200 face shields and 1,000 COVID-19 awareness flyers. Beneficiaries include marketers of the William Grant and Irean Grant markets, Motorcyclists & car unions, and the SMS Clinic, among others. However, with the outbreak and rapid spread of COVID-19, it finds its necessary to buttress the government’s effort in containing it. Liberia is currently experiencing rapid increase in COVID-19 cases.
