The first-in-two-years’ appointment of the Montserrado County District #10 Representative into a Specialized Committee was greeted with applause. Rep. Kolubah and 72 other Representatives and 30 Senators made up of the 54th Session, seated on January 15, 2018. Rep. Kolubah, a critic of the President, always accused the government of corruption and bad governance. Besides Rep. Joe complained, the Liberia National Police also complained Rep. Kolubah to the Lower House of allegedly bringing hundreds of protestors on the grounds of the Capitol Building, one of outbound grounds for the protesters.

Up to February 4, 2020 when this editorial was compiled, the Cable News Network (CNN) reported 425 deaths and 20,438 confirmed cases in Wuhan, Hubei Province. This premise is just to simulate how catastrophic such a calamity can be as it is the case with China, and how desperate the victims are in terms of help, compassion and sympathy from friends and brethren. Besides these interventions during the time of Liberia’s adversity, China has contributed immensely to Liberia’s post-war growth and development. However, as is customarily done here, friends and neighbors do pass by to express sympathy to bereaved families or a sick person, though they may not have money to offer. Is the Liberian Government saying that it lacks stationery to write the Chinese Embassy here to offer sympathy and hope for speedy recovery from the health disaster in China, or is it unable to host a press conference or publicly express its sympathy for the Chinese?

-APM Terminals to take the leadThe National Port Authority (NPA) has announced that the dredging of the Free Port of Monrovia began yesterday, Tuesday, February 4, 2020. The dredging exercise, which is said to have begun yesterday, came following a period of dire scarcity of gasoline on the market. According to the press release, the Freeport of Monrovia, which is the largest sea port in the country, the dredging will be done as far as 3.5 meters depth level within entrance channel. The press release noted that Van Oord, the world’s largest dredging and marine company, will carry out the dredging of the port, adding that the exercise conforms with the best practice and will ensure improved trade and commerce. Headquartered in The Hague, Netherlands, APM Terminals is one of the world’s largest port and terminal operators, providing cargo support and container inland services.

According to the Senate Committee on Energy and Resources, Atty. Toga Nimley as chairman of the Liberia Electricity Regulatory Commission. According to information gathered, the U.S. government will continue to withhold funding from the Commission until the nomination was withdrawn. The Liberia Electricity Regulatory Commission is part of the Millennium Challenge Compact support to reform the electricity sector. LERC will develop guidelines for electricity suppliers that guarantee health, safety and environmental standards in supplying electricity to homes and communities.

MONROVIA – The Liberia Women Forum has urged the Government of Liberia to begin a nationwide awareness campaign about the Coronavirus outbreak. The pro-women group has also called on the Ministry of Health to put out a comprehensive plan to combat the virus. This plan, according to the women’s group, should include guidance for health centers, health workers and citizens. Recently, Health authorities requested US$3 million to boost the country’s surveillance and preventive mechanisms against the ominous coronavirus that has hit several countries outside of China. “The initial investment in this fight is US$3 million to help us put in place measures and mechanisms to protect the population should in case anything was to hit us.

Buchanan – Grand Bassa County Health team in collaboration with the County authority has launched a cleaning up awareness under the theme “Community hygiene to discourage rodents from entering homes”. The awareness seeks to prevent the spread of Lassa fever in communities. The awareness was launched on January 31 in Gaye Peter’s Town, one of the communities affected by Lassa fever in Electoral District #4. Gabriel B. Kassay, the county’s disease Surveillance Officer, said “Since the beginning of this year we have suspected over 71 persons being effected with Lassa fever, 25 persons have been confirmed with Lassa fever and 4 deaths”. “Lassa Fever is a very serious sickness because it can spread quickly and lead to suffering and death of many people”.

The launch of the joint program coincided with the official dedication of a pump constructed by the Watkins Initiative For Nations which is intended to benefit the over 5,000 residents of Tarr Town Community, located on the Old Road. WIN believes that though access to water sources in Montserrado has improved, there is still serious challenge for Liberians at community levels to benefit from piped water. Officially launching the joint project, Journalist Y. Solomon W. Watkins said expanding safe piped water especially in Montserrado is thus a critical priority for him and his team. Elder Koon called on Liberians to follow the good example of Journalist Watkins to ensure communities in Liberia lack no development most importantly for access to piped water.

World Wetlands Day (WWD) is held annually on February 2, marking the date of the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands on February 2, 1971 when a small group of environmentalists signed an international agreement at the Ramsar Convention in Iran. The President also called upon all people residing in Liberia to join the EPA in executing appropriate programs to make the day meaningful. At the official program marking World Wetlands Day in Paynesville on Monday, Mr. Blama warned that the destruction of wetlands poses ‘serious’ threat to the environment and leads to biodiversity loss. In his keynote address, former Lands, Mines and Energy Minister, Dr. Eugene Shannon recommended several measures for the conservation of wetlands, including the strengthening of institutions to manage and protect wetlands and the inclusion of local non-governmental organizations in the institutional arrangements for wetlands conservation. This year, WWD is celebrated under the global them Wetlands and Biodiversity, while the national theme is “Protect Wetlands and save Biodiversity.”
