The Public Prosecutor, in the Attorney General’s Office ordered the detention, pending trial, of the Assistant of the General Department of Settlements and Deputy Manager of the Jumhuria bank, Surman branch for a LD 10 million fraud. They are accused of collecting illegal material benefits within the bank branch by designing a plan to deduct the amount from the bank’s account by making successive bank transfers to the accounts of relatives. This would camouflage the origin of the proceeds and make it difficult to track them and make the act of seizing the amount easier.

Libya and Saudi Arabia have signed the Hajj Agreement Protocol for the year 2024, as part of the current arrangement for operating Libyan flights. This came during the Deputy Minister of Hajj in Saudi Arabia, Abdel Fattah Mashat, received the Chairman of the General Authority for Hajj Affairs, Ali Al-Bashir, and a number of officials of the Authority to discuss important issues related to Hajj affairs.

LUNO A will replace the $60 million Economic Indicator Monitoring (EIM) contract awarded in August 2021. The original EIM contract was for $29 million and was expanded to $60 million due to strong demand for the unclassified analytics and services. “Because of the incredible success with the EIM contract, we’ve substantially increased our financial commitment to commercial capabilities with LUNO A,” Devin Brande, director of NGA Commercial Operations, said in a statement. Those areas are general change detection, climate security and natural resources, feature identification, infrastructure and high cadence transportation network monitoring, facility monitoring, incidental and fortuitous processing, and emerging products, data and services, NGA said. The current contractors that compete for task orders on the EIM contract are BAE Systems, Ball Aerospace, BlackSky Technology, Continental Mapping Consultants, and Royce Geospatial Consultants.

ABS (Agility Beyond Space) is now looking for a new CEO. In its latest full year results, the operator made the surprise announcement that CEO Amit Somani is leaving immediately for personal reasons. Somani was only appointed in September 2022, and gave his first interview in the role to Via Satellite in November last year. The company has undergone a huge amount of change recently and rebranded as Agility Beyond Space (ABS), moving away from its former name Asia Broadcast Services. In its financial results, ABS generated revenues of just under $69 million for the 12 months to the end of September.

Libya’s state National Oil Corporation (NOC) revealed today that Libya’s total exports of crude oil during 2023 exceeded 432 million barrels, or an average of 1.184 million barrels per day. These accrued over US$ 35.8 billion at an average price during the past year of US$ 83 per barrel.

Libya's Tripoli-based government plans to remove petrol subsidies, Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah has said. He indicated that state petrol subsidies currently stand at 50 per cent, and are taking a toll on the nation's finances and exhausting its resources. However, cutting subsidies will heavily affect Libyans' petrol purchasing power, as the average public sector salary is $240, according to salary tracker Bdex. In response to the widespread anger regarding his decision, Mr Dbeibah repeated that the intention of his decision was to ensure subsidies benefit citizens, instead of smuggling networks. Mr Dbeibah also said smuggling to neighbouring countries had led to fuel shortages in Libya's border regions.

The European Union wants to send at least three warships to safeguard vessels in the Red Sea facing attacks by Yemen's Houthi rebels.
