UN Mission In Libya Fails To Offer Solutions For Peace Settlement
BENGHAZI (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 07th August, 2023) The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has not provided any solutions for a peace settlement in the country, Spokesman for the Libyan National Army (LNA) Ahmed Al-Mismari told Sputnik on Monday. In March 2023, they reaffirmed their commitment and held a meeting with leaders of armed groups from across the country. The UNSMIL said that this was the largest meeting for the last 10 years and that it was an important step toward sustainable peace and development for people across Libya. The south of the country remains in turmoil due to civil unrest, the persisting terrorist threat and armed tribal violence. Its main purposes are to support Libyan transitional authorities, provide mediation in implementing Libyan political agreements, support key country's institutions and to monitor situation with human rights.

Libyan governing body’s vote to replace its head adds uncertainty to the country’s split politics
CAIRO (AP) — One of Libya’s top governing bodies elected a new head on Sunday, in a development that could further fracture the country already split between two rival administrations. Takala would take over from former head Khaled el-Meshri, a powerful figure who had been key in negotiations over the country’s election laws. The international community and the United Nations have repeatedly said that nationwide elections are key to ending the country’s decade-long power vacuum. The country was then for years split between rival administrations in the east and west, each supported by different militias and foreign governments. The powerful commander Khalifa Hifter continues to hold sway in the country’s eastern region, from its main city of Benghazi.

Libya's Supreme Council of State elected a new leader on Sunday, in a development that could further fracture a country already split between two rival administrations. Mr Takala will take over from former head Khaled El-Meshri, a powerful figure who had been key in negotiations over the country's election laws. The final count was 67 to 62 in favour of Mr Takala. The introduction of a new leader at the helm of a key political institution could add more uncertainty to the country's already deeply divided politics. It is unclear what positions Mr Takala, a politician from the city of Khoms and member of the council since it was formed in 2016, will take on key political issues.

Oil Minister meets with organizers of Libya Energy and Economy Summit 2023
The Libyan Oil Minister, Mohamed Aoun today had the first working meeting with the organizers of the Libya Energy and Economy Summit 2023 to inform them of upcoming initiatives in the energy sector. The Ministry of Oil and Gas will invite official delegations from Europe, Africa and the Middle East and organizations including OPEC to participate in the event on November 8-9, 2023 in Tripoli. The minister stressed that about a third of Libya’s onshore and offshore territory has yet to be explored for hydrocarbons, as well as the diversification of its resource base for future production, and discussed the recent lifting of force majeure by some international operators – which is expected to unleash investment in the market. Energy Capital & Power, the organizer of the summit, and the Ministry of Oil and Gas are looking forward to receiving ministerial and private sector delegations from Italy, France, Spain, Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States, Turkey, Egypt, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and other countries in the Middle East and Africa. High State Council elects new head: Mohamed Takala
In elections broadcast live, the High State Council (HSC) elected Mohamed Takala as its new head today. Incumbent HSC head Khaled Al-Mishri lost by 62 votes to 67 in the second round of voting out of a total vote of 131. Takala had gone through in the first round of votes by 39 votes to Mishri’s 49 votes. Takala’s election was seen as a surprise result and is interpreted more as a rejection of Mishri rather than an election of Takala. The HSC had split over the last few years, and it is hoped Takala would reunite the HSC.

Niger military on brink of West African bloc’s deadline to reverse coup
NIAMEY: Pressure on the leaders of a coup in Niger mounted Sunday with the approach of the West African bloc’s deadline for the military to relinquish control or face possible armed intervention. Niger’s military leaders have said they will meet force with force. Algeria, itself an economic and military power on the continent which shares a long land border with Niger, has warned against a military solution. “What is the situation today in countries that have experienced military intervention?,” he said, pointing to Libya and Syria. Haftar, Bathily discuss latest political developments in Libya
