The Acting Head of the U.N. Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Raisedon Zenenga met 10 August with Tripoli-based Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Mohamed Al-Haddad, to discuss “the latest security developments in Tripoli and adjacent areas as well as the progress on the military and security track,” UNSMIL revealed on Thursday. According to the Mission, Zenenga commended Al-Hadda’s “contributions to defuse and de-escalate tensions in the capital and western region.”“He also welcomed the steps being taken towards unification of military institutions, most recently through talks between the two Military Commanders on 18-19 July in Tripoli,” UNSMIL concluded.

A magnitude 5.9 earthquake hit Benghazi and other cities of eastern Libya with various intensities on late Friday night. The epicenter of the magnitude 5.9 quake, which occurred at 23:31 P.M. (Libya time), was located at central Mediterranean Sea, 189 kilometers north-west of Benghazi with depth of 10 kilometers, according to data by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).

The National Center for Disease Control in Libya (NCDC) reported on Friday that 76 people tested positive for COVID-19, marking 23 percent of the infection rate. 247 people recovered in the same reporting period. The total recorded COVID-19 cases in Libya have reached more than 500,000 since the start of the pandemic, while over 490,000 of which have recovered, according to the NCDC. The virus has claimed the lives of 6,434 people in total. Over two million people received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, while over one million were fully vaccinated with two doses.

The United Nations Security Council will vote next Monday to choose a new head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL). According to Al-Arabiya TV private sources, there is an international overall trend to appoint the Senegalese Abdoulaye Bathily as head of the UNSMIL. Bathily is a former Senegalese minister and defender of black African rights against racism, and has been working since 2014 with the United Nations and was head of the United Nations Mission in Central Africa, and also chaired the Strategic Review Committee for the work of the UNSMIL.

The Board of Directors of Egyptian Musicians Syndicate confirmed that what is currently being circulated on social media platforms claiming that former head of Musicians Syndicate Hany Shaker issued a decision to stop Iraqi singer Kadim Al Sahir from holding concerts in Egypt is completely false and totally rejected. The board of directors of the Musicians Syndicate emphasized in its press statment that the suggestions of the Syndicate head should be discussed first from the Board of Directors side before being issued in the form of official decision by the Syndicate. The board of directors of the Syndicate calls on the media to investigate the accuracy of the circulated news that offend a great artist with an honorable history like Hany Shaker. At the end of its press statement Musicians Syndicat thanked the former head of Musicians Syndicate Hany Shaker, for his efforts and achievements over the past years.

Jordanian composer Ahmed Nabil Kamel composed a new song for veteran Iraqi singer Kadim Al Sahir which will be included in the later upcoming album. Sahir performed also a highly successful concert in Fouka Bay in North Coast on August 4. Dubbed “Caesar of Arab Singing” Al Sahir is conseidered one of the most successful artists in the history of the Arab world. 1 Using a generous contribution from the Government of Germany, WHO has delivered 2 fully equipped mobile clinics to the Benghazi Health Services Directorate to complement primary health care services in the municipality. 2 These mobile clinics will support WHO’s efforts to increase the availability of emergency health care services for vulnerable people, including immigrants. 3 The clinics will primarily target internally displaced people and migrants in remote areas who have little access to healthcare. 7 Ms. Elizabeth Hoff, WHO Representative in Libya, said that she was extremely grateful to Germany for her unwavering support. 10 We will continue our efforts to expand mobile clinics to help more people who may not otherwise have access to healthcare.”

CAIRO – 11 August 2022: Youth aged 18-29 constitutes 40.2 percent of the workforce in Egypt with men representing 64.1 percent of these youth, Egypt’s Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) said, citing data of 2022. Marriages among male youth aged 18-29 reached 59 percent of the marriages that took place in 2021, while marriages among female youth reached 82.4 percent, said the agency. On the other side, divorces among male and female youth reached 17.8 percent and 37.8 percent from the total divorces in 2021 respectively, according to the data. Moreover, death rate among young people in the age group (15-29 years) was 0.8 per thousand young people (1.0 per thousand males, 0.6 per thousand females), added the agency. Egyptian youth aged 18-29 represent more than 21 percent of the population, according to earlier data.

Alleged fuel smuggler Gordon Debono has requested an urgent police investigation aimed at identifying the government-based source of rumours which had falsely connected him to the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia. The request cites the conclusions of the public inquiry into Caruana Galizia’s killing, which amongst other things, had declared that the State was responsible for spreading these rumours. “The Board is informed that this is what happened after the assassination, when the Office of the Prime Minister disseminated the possibility that the individuals behind the murder could be persons connected to fuel smuggling. News which also began to be spread in the international press,” the report had said. However, Debono’s letter pointed out, neither the amount allegedly laundered, nor the predicate offence (the crime whose proceeds required laundering) had yet been identified, two full years after the start of the proceedings.

Libya aims to increase the level of oil production to two million barrels per day, announced the state-owned National Oil Corporation (NOC) on Thursday. Chairman of NOC, Farhat bin Qadara, said a medium-term plan will be outlined to achieve this goal, which will extend from three to five years and that will see the participation of several companies with their own projects, according to a statement by NOC. Bin Qadara announced that the production rate in the last month has slightly exceeded the figure of one million and 200 thousand barrels per day.

The U.S. Special Envoy and Ambassador to Libya, Richard Norland, paid tribute on Thursday to Sheikh Al-Basha Saleh Al-Atyush, a leading figure of Al-Mghrabi tribe from eastern Libya, who passed away yesterday. “We honor his contributions supporting peace, unity, and reconciliation in Libya,” Norland was quoted as saying by the U.S. Embassy in Libya via Twitter. The American diplomat offered his condolences to Al-Atyush’s family and loved ones.
