In 2019, when I visited Alibaba in Hangzhou, I was told that the top five best-selling Malaysian products on Alibaba’s Tmall were No 1: white coffee, No 2: Julie’s Biscuits, No 3: white coffee, No 4: white coffee and No 5: white coffee. Malaysia can fully utilise our local agriculture products to add value to high-quality downstream products for export. Therefore, we must seriously look into local high-tech companies to assist them in growing into global companies. In this regard, the Taiwanese government has set the right policies in the past, which created global companies such as TSMC and Acer. We must set the goal high to grow our companies to be national, regional and eventually global companies.

Aside from the political arena, there are many women leaders in the sphere of family business. The STEP 2019 Global Family Business Survey shows that only 18% of family businesses around the world are led by women and this relatively small percentage seems to imply that women still face a glass ceiling. Married with two young children, she works full time in the family business after having gained experience in multinational companies. Such influences may shape the mentality of female family members to be more concerned with the family’s needs, rather than tending to the family business. Dr Feranita is a lecturer at Taylor’s Business School’s Faculty of Business and LawThis article is a collaboration between Family Business Network (FBN) Asia and Taylor’s University.

Amazon on Wednesday expanded its chain of physical shops selling non-food products to Britain, opening a new outlet southeast of London that will compete with local stores. The US conglomerate's "4-star" store in the Bluewater shopping mall in Kent is stocked with items such as electronics, toys and books that have at least a 4-star rating from Amazon's UK customers. The online retail giant in March launched its first non-US Amazon Fresh convenience store in London, where customers choose groceries and simply walk out, while a tracking system charges their shopping to their bank accounts. There is also one Amazon Salon in central London, which allows customers to use immersive technology to try different hair styles and colours before getting a cut. Amazon was already strongly placed in Britain before the pandemic, with growing dominance in the delivery sector.

For the record, Kisona, 23, from Seremban is a senior BAM player who won the women’s singles in the 2019 SEA Games. This incident and many more similar ones before it warrant the establishment of a hate speech commission or committee that would be able to evaluate and quickly decide on a form of retribution against the offender. National Unity Minister Datuk Halimah Mohamed Sadique has stressed in the Dewan Rakyat that our existing laws are adequate to tackle issues linked to religion and race. “Those who deliberately disrupt unity and harmony can be investigated and charged under the existing Acts,” she said. If the existing laws are adequate, we call on the Unity Minister to use them to take action against this deliberate attempt to disrupt harmony.

PETALING JAYA: With the nation on the verge of allowing interstate travel – which has been banned since Jan 13 – efforts are being made by all parties to ensure that it will be a success, as it is expected to benefit consumers and companies alike. Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) president Datuk Tan Kok Liang (pic) said restrictions on domestic travel for the last 20 months had adversely affected the industry and businesses. Interstate travel would not only help the tourism industry recover but would have a multiplier effect that benefit small and medium enterprises across the country, he said, unlike the current travel bubble that benefited only Langkawi. PETALING JAYA: Interstate travel is on the agenda following the declining number of Covid-19 infections that had once peaked at 24,599 on Aug 26. Health experts described this as a positive sign and an indication that the vaccination programme was working. To prevent a spike in Covid-19 cases, he urged those who have yet to be vaccinated to do so and the public to strictly adhere to the SOP. “Once people’s mobility is increased with all sectors open, chances of increased Covid-19 transmission will be there. In order to ensure the recovery continues, everyone should play their role and help to ensure another wave of Covid-19 transmission does not happen,” she said.

Since 2019, 2.3 million doses of Mosquirix have been administered to infants in Ghana, Kenya and Malawi in a large-scale pilot programme coordinated by the WHO. "This is a vaccine developed in Africa by African scientists and we're very proud," said WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. The vaccine's effectiveness at preventing severe cases of malaria in children is only around 30%, but it is the only approved vaccine. "This is how we fight malaria, layering imperfect tools on top of each other," said Ashley Birkett, who leads global malaria vaccine work at Path, a non-profit global health organization that has funded the development of the vaccine with GSK and the three-country pilot. GSK has to date committed to produce 15 million doses of Mosquirix annually, in addition to the 10 million doses donated to the WHO pilot programmes, up to 2028 at a cost of production plus no more than 5% margin.
