The problem was, when people outside of the peninsula heard that the road to the Coromandel was closed, they thought that meant the road to Coromandel town too, says Jan.”We had all manner of people cancelling bookings for accommodation, whereas in fact, the town was open and traffic was being diverted through the town to get to the east coast.”Jan would like to see greater differentiation between the Coromandel peninsula and Coromandel town. We were left with no one coming into town.”The absence of the ferry service from downtown Auckland has also had a huge impact on Coromandel town, she says. “We were the gateway to the east coast.”Ferry company Fullers 360 suspended its Coromandel service in the summer of 2020 due to the effects of Covid-19. The company is eager to get the ferry service back up and running, but there is no quick fix for the skills shortage, he says. One of the reasons the business group was started was to advocate for the return of the ferry service, says Jen.

However, some people with religious beliefs still reject the idea of same-sex couples getting married, their ministers continuing to withhold formal blessing of such unions. He has not affirmed gay marriage - but declared his priests can now bless the civil wedding of two homosexual people. There still can’t be any of what his church calls formal marriage language, nor people wearing wedding gear. In August, it said there were about 4100 “same-sex marriages” registered here since the 2013 Marriage Amendment Act. We’re attending a gay wedding soon, and looking forward to it.

Shirley’s Strawberries in Ōhau, south of Levin, is run by second-generation strawberry farmer Sue Fifita-Tovo, her husband Rob and their wider whānau (extended family group). Their farm has several large plots, producing tons of strawberries each year. Most are picked for the market, but fruit that is left are there for pick-your-own fruit lovers during the summer break. Fifita-Tovo took over the farm from her mum, Shirley Donovan, six seasons ago and introduced pick-your-own days as a way to give her workers a break during the Christmas season. Fifita-Tovo said being able to pick your own produce was appealing because people could spend time with loved ones and reconnect with nature.

Mental health responses make up a large chunk of their day-to-day callouts. Together they attend a mental health callout and between them work out what skills or personnel are appropriate for that particular incident. Between January 1, 2018, and October 1, 2023, police attended 199,425 mental health and suicide-related events nationally. That was a sentiment shared by Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand chief executive Shaun Robinson in his letter supporting a national rollout of alternative responses to community mental health to the Minister of Health at the time, Andrew Little. Shaun says the MHF had long supported mental health responses where police presence was the exception rather than the rule.

The late Cameron Duncan's family was among a number of whānau 'extremely distressed' by vandalism to Māori graves at Waikumete Cemetery in Auckland. OPINIONDoes anyone else see a link between acts of vandalism against the urupa at Waikumete and pou at Manawatu and this current Government? After decades of action, supported by all governments, to revive te reo, they are trying to stamp out any official mention.
