Last week Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown kicked off what is always the most important thing a Council does every three years – update its ‘Long term plan’. So – perhaps surprisingly – it has been quite refreshing seeing Mayor Brown really fight for Auckland to get a better deal from ‘Wellington’. As Transport Minister, Local Government Minister and Minister for Auckland, it is clear that the relationship between the two Browns (presumably unrelated) will be critical. Fundamentally the big question for the government will be the extent to which they are willing to devolve meaningful power to Auckland Council, and work with them in genuine partnership. On the one hand, it was a National-led government that created Auckland Council in the first place and eventually funded things like rail electrification and the CRL.

Bettle & Associates enters a new era this month, with founder George Bettle ceasing operational responsibilities after 22 years. Bettle & Associates was founded by Bettle in 2001 after the purchase of what was Grey Worldwide’s Waikato office. “It was a lovely and quite emotional evening for me,” says Bettle. Will, Adam and I started working on the succession and exit plan nearly three years ago – and these days Bettle and Associates is theirs. For me, I wanted to leave while I still loved the job and was still doing some of the best work of my career.

Morocco’s position describing the seizure of a phosphate shipment in South Africa as an act of “political piracy” was welcomed on Friday by New Zealand-based fertilizer company Balance Agri-Nutrients. Quoted by Stuff.co mediaMark Wynne, director general of the New Zealand company, described the reaction of the OCP as “pragmatic,” MAP reported Thursday. The financial implications, from our side, are only related to the ship, but we are covered by insurance anyway,” explained Mark Wein. The president of Balance Agri-Nutrients confirms that his company will continue to purchase Moroccan phosphate. This calls for referring the case of the ship NM Cherry Blossom to the merits.

Volunteer firefighters from Clyde, Alexandra, Tarras, Dunstan and Luggate, as well as career fighters and staff from Dunedin and Queenstown and skilled helicopter pilots attended. The fire in Fruitgrowers Rd, a short distance from Clyde Dam, had reignited about 4.20pm from an earlier fire started by fireworks on Friday night. Mr Lamont urged people to think twice about letting off fireworks in windy conditions, and to be aware that it only took one spark to cause a wildfire. Elsewhere in the South Island, firefighters were continuing to work on fires at Templeton in the Selwyn District and at Glenham in Southland.

By David Cunningham*Since 2020, the story of New Zealand house prices has been a truly wild one. This limited supply, plus ongoing demand from a growing population, has supported house prices – keeping them at all-time highs. Those people all need somewhere to live – and that’s helped to push up both house prices and rents. What’s interesting to note about UK house prices is just how steadily they’ve increased over this time. The extraordinary monetary policy easing the world over was behind this, instead supporting house prices.

It was the highest level recorded since August, largely driven by positive shifts in the expected path of inflation. All this run of positive data has markets pulling back on their enthusiastic expectation that the Fed will be cutting rates in 2024. It will be interesting to see whether the industry responds with generally lower savings rate offers, or higher lending and deposit rates. The UST 10yr yield is on the rise again, up +12 bps from yesterday at 4.23% on the jobs data. That all means our TWI-5 starts today just on 70.2 and -40 bps lower from this time yesterday, -50 bps lower than a week ago.
