Winston Peters and David Seymour will share the role of Deputy Prime Minister for the first time in New Zealand’s political history. In a highly unorthodox arrangement, Peters, 78, will take the deputy role for the next 18 months. He will then be replaced by 40-year-old Seymour, the leader of Act, for the second half of the coalition government’s three-year term. The New Zealand First leader has also snared the coveted role of Foreign Affairs Minister – a role Peters has filled in previous administrations. Winston Peters (left) and David Seymour shake hands at the signing of a coalition deal today.

Lynne Martin, 63, was found dead in the cells at the Gisborne Police Station on Thursday morning, Stuff understands. She was being held there before being transferred to prison, after a jury on Wednesday afternoon found her guilty of murdering her father, Ronald Allison. At the time of her father's death, Martin was "flat broke", and an undischarged bankrupt with just $119 to her name, and she knew she would get $150,000 from her father's will, Manning said. "That phone call, sadly, seems to be all it took to set her off on a chain of events that led to her father's death," he said. It wasn't a "remarkable coincidence" that these strands of evidence pointed to Martin being the killer, he said.

A US couple who allegedly fled to New Zealand following the death of their adopted son have criticised their one-year jail sentence as “excessive”. Timothy and Sarah Johnson moved across the world with their surviving children just one year after they found their son Seth Johnson, 7, dead in his vomit-soaked bed in their Minnesota home in 2015. The couple were aware of the young boy’s failing health, including bruises and small cracks on his skin, but “had issues going to doctors”, local publications report. Timothy and Sarah Johnson, who reportedly fled to New Zealand after their son's death, requested the court to overturn their jail sentence, calling it an 'injustice'. Source: Fox 9 MinnesotaThe Johnsons then prayed for Seth’s health the night before his death.
