Banks dollar sale falls as naira weakens to 1,479/dollar
The total value of transactions recorded at the official Nigerian Autonomous Foreign Exchange Market fell from $465.29m on Tuesday and $203.93m on Wednesday, data obtained from FMDQ Exchange showed on Thursday. This indicates a 56 per cent drop in the value of transactions recorded on the FMDQ platform which records volume and value of transactions on NAFEM, the official FX market. The CBN had last week issues circulars compelling banks to sell their excess dollar holdings, among others. Meanwhile, the naira fell by 1.4 per cent to the dollar at the parallel market on Thursday, following strong demand for dollars. Checks by our correspondent showed that the value of foreign exchange transactions recorded on the official Nigeria Autonomous Foreign Exchange Market had reduced from $584m on Monday to $465.29m on Tuesday and $203.93m on Wednesday.

Oppressive cost-of-living crisis
BENEATH the swirling wave of protests on the streets of the country is the oppressive and spiking cost-of-living crisis. In a country notorious for low wages, high unemployment and shabby social services, Nigerians are being pushed to the wall. Before Tinubu, Nigeria had witnessed the 2012 petrol protests under Goodluck Jonathan and the #EndSARS protests in October 2020 under Muhammadu Buhari. Tinubu aggravated the crisis in June, prompting the Central Bank of Nigeria to float the naira. From the June 2023 rate of 22.79 per cent, inflation accelerated to 28.99 per cent in December.

Breach of Gunshot Act indefensible
THERE is no more tenable excuse for the health facilities that continue to breach the law by rejecting gunshot and ‘one-chance’ victims. Rightly, the ministry is aghast that hospitals are still unreasonably sidestepping the Gunshot Act 2017. In hindsight, doctors cite police harassment and accusations of tampering with evidence to leave accident and gunshot victims to their fate. In truth, the Compulsory Treatment and Care for Victims of Gunshot Act, in 2017, promulgated by the Muhammadu Buhari administration, is not entrenched among stakeholders. This has been discarded for the Gunshot Act.

Kano anti-graft agency threatens to prosecute traders hoarding goods

According to him, the agency would not hesitate to seize hoarded goods as well as prosecute the culprits. Forex crisis: EFCC 7,000-man task force goes after dollar racketeers
In a move to reduce the pressure on the naira, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has raised a 7,000-man special task force across its 14 zonal commands to clamp down on dollar racketeers. Cardoso argued that the foreign exchange market was facing increased demand pressures, causing a continuous decline in the value of the naira. Gov Otti assures PLWDs of inclusive governance, rights, privileges
Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, Wednesday decried the exclusion of Persons Living With Disabilities (PLWDs) in governance, assuring them of equal opportunity and all-inclusive governance in the state. Otti stated this during the Abia State Disability Day Celebration/Interactive Session held in Umuahia, lamenting the exclusion of the people from playing active and leadership roles in the political and social life in Nigeria. In his speech, the Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba eulogized the talents exhibited by persons with disabilities and thanked Governor Otti for his support in giving them a sense of belonging. He stated that a youth empowerment platform will soon be launched to facilitate the smooth dispensation of their welfare/empowerment packages.
