Meningitis killed 190 in 2023, says FG
The Federal Government has alerted Nigerians to the outbreak of Cerebrospinal Meningitis. Meningitis is an inflammation of the fluid and three membranes (meninges) surrounding one’s brain and spinal cord. The disease claimed 190 lives across the country last year, according to the FG. He said the NCDC, in collaboration with ministries, departments, agencies, and partners through the CSM TWG, had implemented several measures to ensure enhanced coordination, collaboration, and communication for response across the country. “Routine meetings of the national multi-sectoral CSM TWG (were held) to coordinate prevention and preparedness activities.

Bye-elections: INEC opens application portal for observers
INEC said this in a notice issued by its acting Director, Electoral Party Monitoring (EPM), Mrs Hauwa Habib in Abuja on Thursday. Habib adviced the organisations to visit (http://observergroups.inecnigeria.org) and complete the application form. She added that INEC was conducting the by-election/re-run election stemming from the 2023 general elections, as directed by various election petition appeal tribunals. “Currently, 35 Constituencies are affected by these Court-ordered elections, while three cover entire constituencies, others involve only a few polling units. “Both categories of elections are scheduled to take place simultaneously in all affected constituencies on Saturday Feb. 3,” Habib added.

Supreme court delivers judgment on Plateau gov poll Friday
The Supreme Court will on Friday deliver judgment in an appeal filed by the Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, challenging the nullification of his election by the Court of Appeal. The statement read “Take notice that judgment in the Plateau State Governorship Appeal at the Supreme Court is scheduled to be delivered on Friday, January 12, 2024. The development prompted Mutfwang to file an appeal at the Supreme Court to challenge the lower court’s decision. At the hearing of the appeal on Tuesday, a five-member panel of the Supreme Court led by John Okoro took arguments from lawyers to parties in the case. After arguments between Mutfwang’s lawyer, Kanu Agabi, and Yilwatda’s counsel, J.O Olatoke, the Supreme Court said a date for judgment would be communicated to parties in the suit.

INEC begins accreditation of observers for February 3 by-elections
