PLATEAU State has been under siege by terrorists since the beginning of the current democratic dispensation. The raid of Mangu Local Government Area, where the new state governor, Caleb Mutfwang, hails from, remains one of the worst attacks in the history of the state. In his inaugural speech, Governor Mutfwang expressed determination to face the state’s security challenges head-on. We must break this vicious circle of hate and attacks and refuse to allow people to brand us negatively. There have been instances where these local security men have squared up to invading terrorists.

Enugu Govt bans illegal mining activities
The Enugu State government has ordered all illegal mining activities in the state to stop immediately, warning of dire consequences for any illegal miner that flouts its directive, the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia announced in a statement on Thursday. The government observed that it was in the overriding interest of the public to protect the people from any hazard or pollution, and also maintain equal rights of benefits accruable from any mineral resources to the people of the state. “Following the directive by His Excellency, the Governor of Enugu State, on the report of the discovery of mineral resources in some communities in Enugu State; and the illegal mining of such mineral resources in those communities without the authorization/consent of the State Government, I hereby direct that all illegal mining activities in Enugu State should stop with immediate effect”, the statement readsREAD ALSO FROM NIGERIAN TRIBUNE

The 18 percent interest rate
RECENTLY, in an aggressive push to contain the country’s inflationary pressure, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) raised its benchmark interest rate otherwise known as the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) by 50 basis point to 18 percent. He was speaking against the backdrop of Nigeria’s inflation rate, which accelerated to 21.91 percent in February from 21.82 in January. Nigeria’s annual Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth rate slowed to 3.10 percent in 2022, compared to 3.40 percent in 2021. By the new increase in the monetary policy rate, the CBN has capped the official interest rate at 18 percent from 17.5 percent in January. It is a legitimate question to ask how small scale businesses are expected to survive with this high interest rate, and whether the CBN is not more or less shrinking opportunities for investment.

Naira Not Devalued, Says CBN
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has affirmed its commitment to gradual rate convergence and denied devaluing the naira. Although the Import and Export window adjusted its rates, the CBN didn’t officially do so. While a report had supposed the CBN devalued the naira to N631/$, the Acting Director of Corporate Communications, Dr. Isa AbdulMumin, dismissed it as false. Despite that, financial analyst Paul Alaje predicts inflation between 34% and 38% in the next two to three months if the naira devalues. He noted that widespread adoption of electronic payment modes has also impacted monetary policy management in efforts to maintain price stability and financial stability.
