More than a former prime minister, she remains a powerful idea of democratic resistance and politics rooted in the aspirations of ordinary people. Born into privilege yet forged in adversity, Benazir Bhutto’s political life unfolded against the backdrop of authoritarian rule. She was, above all, a political actor who believed in the transformative power of people’s politics. Her life reminds us that democracy in Pakistan has never been gifted; it has always been contested, resisted and reclaimed. Completing such projects on schedule, as envisioned by June 2026, would mark a major step toward energy security and economic self-reliance. The water sector review highlights perhaps the most critical long-term challenge facing Pakistan: water security. India has approved the Dulhasti Stage II hydropower project on the Chenab River in occupied Jammu and Kashmir, in what is being described as an open violation of the Indus Waters Treaty. Experts say that the Dulhasti Stage II project could prove harmful to Pakistan from a defensive and strategic perspective, as the Chenab River is one of the rivers allocated to Pakistan. The construction of this project goes against the spirit of the Indus Waters Treaty, which India recently announced it was unilaterally suspending. In the Dulhasti Stage II project, the existing infrastructure of Dulhasti Stage I will be used. The 390-megawatt Dulhasti Stage I project was completed in 2007 and operates under a run-of-the-river scheme.

Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar said on Saturday Pakistan was willing to contribute to an international peacekeeping force in Gaza, though it would not deploy troops to disarm or de-weaponise Hamas. “If they say that we should go and start fighting, disarm Hamas, de-weaponise them, and go and destroy the tunnels that Hamas has built until now, that is not our job,” Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar told reporters during a year-end briefing in Islamabad. “We have a very complete understanding on this matter that we cannot do that kind of work,” he added. The deputy prime minister said Pakistan had been using the term “peacekeeping” and had never used the phrase “peace enforcement” while discussing the force. “I have been very clear: Pakistan will be happy to join if the mandate is not peace enforcement and disarming and de-weaponising Hamas.”Dar said Pakistan would not land its forces in Palestine to “fight Muslims.”
