Government adviser David Hui Shu-cheong said that an increase in imported Covid infections is expected after the resumption of cross-border travel, but the city will not reset the lifted Covid restrictions. Speaking in a radio programme on Sunday, Hui believed Covid has become an endemic disease and there is no need to resume social distancing or entry curbs. "I would suggest the current quotas on commuters travel between both sides to be relaxed after one to two weeks' of the monitoring period if there is no significant increase in Covid cases with severe symptoms or deaths," he said. In addition, Hui suggested the government consider allowing people to go outdoors without wearing a mask in the summer. "People taking part in indoor activities such as concerts and taking public transportation would still be required to wear masks," he added.

Travelers wearing a protective suit walks outside Beijing Railway Station in Beijing, China January 7, 2023, as the annual Spring Festival travel rush starts. A gradual restoration of tourist and student arrivals to 2019 levels may add 0.5% and 0.4% to GDP respectively, he added, given that China is the largest consumer of Australian tourism and education exports. On Wednesday, China signaled the end of a two-year ban on importing Australian coal, fueling sentiment that its restrictions on wine, lobsters and other commodities could be next to ease. The improved outlook has lifted Australia’s stock and currency markets with the Aussie nearing its highest since mid-September earlier in the week. “Perhaps the most important implication from the recent improvement in trade relations is that it reduces the risk of government-imposed bans/restrictions on services exports and paves the way for a recovery in both tourism and education exports from early 2023,” Kennedy wrote.

HONG KONG: Asian investors struggled Friday to maintain the week's positive momentum as they eyed sharp losses on Wall Street that came after forecast-beating jobs data that suggested the Federal Reserve (Fed) will have to keep lifting interest rates. Regional markets have enjoyed a strong start to the year, largely thanks to optimism over China's reopening and signs it is toning down its tough talk on a number of issues domestically and geopolitically. Thursday's data make the release of a key non-farm payrolls report later in the day much more important. Asian markets fluctuated after all three main indexes on Wall Street fell more than 1 percent. Both main contracts rose Friday but they are both down almost 10 percent on the week.

SEOUL: Samsung Electronics said Friday it expected its fourth-quarter operating profits to plunge 69 percent as the global downturn causes a sharp decline in demand for memory chips and smartphones. The South Korean tech giant said operating profits for the October-December period likely slumped to 4.3 trillion won ($3.4 billion), a stinging year-on-year drop from 13.87 trillion won. In a statement, Samsung said fourth-quarter profits were "well below current market expectations," blaming the performance on macroeconomic issues, spurred by central banks around the world raising interest rates. The widely expected fourth-quarter drop is the second consecutive margin squeeze for Samsung, which saw a 31.39 percent fall in operating profits in the third quarter year on year. But the global economy is now facing multiple challenges including soaring inflation, rising interest rates and a growing threat of a broad debt crisis.

The trial court held that my action is an incomplete self-defense because it was not commensurate to repel the aggression. Yet, the Court recognized that in self-defense or defense of a relative, the instinct for self-preservation will outweigh rational thinking. In these circumstances, Leo had the right to repel the unlawful aggression in order to protect himself and his father. Moreover, the law requires rational necessity, not indispensable need. The accused may be given the benefit of any reasonable doubt as to whether or not they employed rational means to repel the aggression.
