Civic Party chairman and founder Alan Leong Kah-kit said on Saturday that a new executive committee cannot be formed for the pro-democracy party, leaving it no choice but to dissolve. Leong founded the Civic Party in 2006 with senior counsels Audrey Eu Yuet-mee and Ronny Tong Ka-wah, along with barristers Tanya Chan Suk-chong and Margaret Ng Ngoi-yee. Party members did not participate in the "patriots-only" legislature that took office in January after China's National People's Congress authorized an overhaul of the SAR's electoral system. Tong, who quit the Civic Party in 2015, said it was "unfortunate" and "lamentable" the party may have to disband. Party co-founder Tanya Chan moved to Taiwan last year after she quit the party in 2020.

Government advisor on the pandemic, David Hui Shu-cheong, said on Saturday that it is unnecessary for authorities to tighten the city’s Covid rules as most of the infections recently are mild cases. Hui also said he expected the current wave of Covid cases to peak in a week or two. Speaking on a radio program this morning, the Chinese University professor said there's no need to worry about the epidemic situation, saying most infections have been mild, and the public healthcare system has been coping well with the situation. He told the program that he sees no need to tighten the social distancing measures as long as the public healthcare system is still functioning well. Hui also called on children to get their flu jabs as the winter influenza season is fast approaching.

More importantly, in the event that nuclear microreactors are produced by the US DoD at scale, these small nuclear plants can, in fact, be installed in EDCA locations in different parts of the country. This distinction alone should give the current government pause on allowing nuclear microreactors to be deployed in EDCA locations in the future. More importantly, military nuclear microreactors will allow Washington to deploy different kinds of weapons to influence the security arrangement in the South China Sea and the greater Indo-Pacific. With a military nuclear microreactor in Philippine soil, Washington may be able to operate high-powered conventional military weapons which may be equivalent to weapons of mass destruction. As such, allowing nuclear microreactors in EDCA areas or anywhere in the Philippines should not be on the agenda."

BDO's 20% stock dividend approved by SECBDO [BDO 130.0 0.1%] [link] disclosed that on November 29, the SEC approved the company’s 20% stock dividend that was approved by shareholders back in April. The stock dividend will be used to “fund” the increase in BDO’s authorized capital from P5.5 billion to P8.5 billion. It’s a quick, cheap, and relatively easy way for a company to raise its authorized capital stock. It doesn’t really change anything for shareholders; sure, they get more shares, but their proportional holdings won’t change at all. It’s like a small stock-split, but with the added bonus of allowing BDO to raise its authorized capital stock.

The Government and the MPFA are constantly reviewing the MPF investment regulations and tapping industry’s views with scheme members’ interest as a priority. “The eMPF Platform represents the single largest reform ever carried out by the MPFA,” she elaborated. “The way people retire is changing and most retirees plan to fund their retirement with their MPF, savings and investment.” Chiu observed. And as the eMPF Platform is going to be launched, it will be necessary for scheme members, employers and MPF practitioners to expedite their own digital transformation. It states that MPF trustees must review whether the addition of a new CF could enhance the diversity of the existing range of CFs in an MPF scheme to meet the needs of scheme members with different outcome expectations and risk appetites.

Despite a genial public image, Jiang dealt severely with challenges to ruling party power.
