Marcos denies family’s ill-gotten wealth anew, accuses critics of 'propaganda'People wave flags as Philippines' President Ferdinand Marcos Jr delivers a speech to members of the local Filipino community during an event on the sidelines of the Australia-ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) summit in Melbourne on March 4, 2024. MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has again denied his father’s plunder of billions of public funds during his two-decade rule, calling as “propaganda” the campaign for the Marcos family to return their ill-gotten wealth to the government. Estimates of the amount the Marcoses reportedly amassed in the last few years of Marcos Sr. presidency range from US$5 billion to $13 billion. This sizeable loot far exceeds the yearly salary that Marcos Sr. was earning as president, which was about $4,700 or P100,000. In 2003, the Supreme Court ordered the forfeiture of $658 million worth of frozen Swiss bank deposits belonging to Marcos Sr.

Safe handsYou are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble. — Psalm 32:7Like the unraveling of a rope, the threads of Doug Merkey’s life were breaking one by one. These collective events, combined with living in a cramped attic, became the setting from which his sculpture The Hiding Place emerged. It depicts Christ’s strong, nailed-scarred hands openly cupped together as a place of safety. Doug explained the design of his artwork this way: The “sculpture is Christ’s invitation to hide in Him.” In Psalm 32, David wrote as one who had found the ultimate safe place—God Himself.

At 41, he's struggling to find work in a labor market where companies tend not to hire anyone over 35. The downturn in the property market followed a crackdown on excess borrowing by real estate developers. Many cities have relaxed controls on property deals imposed earlier to cool price bubbles, and some 6,000 property projects have been green-lighted for lending. “The property market has been such a significant source of China’s growth and now it has gone into reverse,” Wright said, though he noted there are signs the market is stabilizing. One strategy would be to shift more national wealth into workers’ pockets, says Michael Pettis, a leading expert on the Chinese economy and professor at Beijing University.

It has been difficult to attract FDIs because investors lack confidence in our economy, in our government and in our future. Nowhere is this lack of investor confidence expressed daily as in our stock market. If these investors are not enthusiastic about our equities market or lack confidence, potential FDIs may think they must have good reasons for staying out. For the local bourse to get exciting again, it needs foreign portfolio investors to join the fun. Once portfolio investors are convinced our country has a bright economic future, their confidence may rub off on potential FDIs.
