Sakina MohammedShe recently published a book of poems, titled My Poetic Place: The Journey to Self-Discovery, and had a chat with Brunch to take us through the inspiration and meaning behind the book. Back in school, I started writing stories and poems; then I later studied literature as a subject for my Ordinary Levels (O/Ls). I’ve had such amazing teachers growing up that it surely is at school that the inspiration and passion for my writing came from. EU Court rejects move to lift ban on LTTE View(s):The European Union’s General Court this week rejected an appeal to lift the proscription of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) as an international terrorist organisation within Europe. They had applied to annul the relisting of the LTTE as a terrorist organisation by the European Council in January 2019, ten years after the military defeat of the LTTE. The European Council had held that in 2019 that the LTTE’s “international fundraising and revival capacities remained” despite its military defeat ten years earlier. The LTTE was first listed as a terrorist organisation by the EU in 2006. The Court rejected multiple pleas lodged by the LTTE branch in Denmark before dismissing the action in full.

Seven Lankan women cricketers afflicted by COVID-19 in Zimbabwe View(s):Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) yesterday confirmed that seven members of the national women’s team, including six players, tested positive for COVID-19 during the ICC World Cup qualifiers in Zimbabwe, one of the countries where the new COVID-19 variant Omicron has been detected. The remainder of the Sri Lanka women’s team will now return via Dubai. Those who tested positive and the doctor on tour will stay back till they test negative. “Accordingly, our players, barring those who tested positive, will travel to Dubai and then to Sri Lanka. Three Sri Lanka women’s squad members first tested positive in Harare last Sunday and were isolated.

Woman dead in earth embankment collapse in Ankumbura
COLOMBO (News 1st); The Disaster Management Center states that a 56- year old woman died and two others were injured when an earth embankment collapsed in Ankumbura. Its Assistant Director, Pradeep Kodippili stated that 10 families have been affected by the Kotiyagala Oya overflow in the Moneragala District due to extreme weather conditions as well. Furthermore, the Meteorological Department warns that there could be more than 75 mm of rain in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Uva Provinces and in some places in the Galle and Matara Districts as well. The Department stated that showers or thundershowers will occur in many parts of the island during the evening today (27).

WHO declares new variant of concern as ‘OMICRON’
(News 1st); The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared a new COVID-19 variant to be “of concern” and had named it ‘OMICRON’. The WHO said it had a large number of mutations, and early evidence suggested an increased reinfection risk. It was first reported to the WHO from South Africa on 24th November, and has also been identified in Botswana, Belgium, Hong Kong and Israel. Travelers from South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Lesotho and Eswatini will not be able to enter the UK unless they are UK or Irish nationals, or UK residents. US officials said flights from South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Mozambique and Malawi would be blocked, with effect on Monday.
