Foreign Minister Peiris said that Sri Lanka looks forward to further collaboration with the Commonwealth in a number of areas including commerce, education, vocational training and climate change. The Minister stated that Sri Lanka has been successful in Mangrove restoration and has emerged as a Commonwealth Blue Charter leader. All Commonwealth Members have the advantage of a common law background but have followed different avenues of development, the Foreign Minister said. The Foreign Minister also briefed Secretary-General Scotland on the steps taken by local institutions in the country with respect to reconciliation. Secretary-General Scotland warmly recalled her visits to Sri Lanka in 2018 and 2019 and appreciated the close engagement that Sri Lanka has consistently maintained with the Commonwealth.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison revealed Mr Porter had stood down as Minister for Industry, Science and Technology and would go to the backbench. The former attorney general sued the national broadcaster over a story that revealed a senior cabinet minister was accused of raping a teenage girl. Mr Porter outed himself as the minister days later in February and vehemently denied the allegations that dated back to 1988 when he was 17. The woman in 2019 came forward to police and accused Mr Porter of raping her when she was 16. Mr Porter then sued the ABC for defamation, arguing it was easy to identify him as the minister involved.

A consignment of Sputnik-V COVID-19 vaccine doses has arrived in Sri Lanka early this morning (September 19). A total of 120,000 doses of the Russian COVID-19 vaccine have arrived in this manner. The flight carrying the vaccine arrived at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) from Moscow, Russia, via Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. The consignment of vaccines was taken by refrigerated lorries of the Sri Lanka Pharmaceutical Corporation to the Central Warehousing Complex in Colombo. State Minister on the subject, Prof. Channa Jayasumana said that the newly arrived consignment will fulfill the total requirement of Sputnik-V vaccines in Sri Lanka.

COLOMBO (News 1st); Japan has lifted the restrictions imposed on all returnees from Six countries including Sri Lanka. Accordingly, returnees from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka will be allowed entry into the country again. The entry ban was imposed earlier this year as part of Japan’s COVID-19 curbing measures on all foreign nationals who spent time in the six countries within 14 days prior to their arrival.japan

COLOMBO (News 1st): The total number of persons arrested for violating quarantine regulations has exceeded 75,000. The number rose to 75,058 with the arrest of 551 persons by the Police, along with 37 vehicles being seized by the Police as well. The suspects were arrested within 24 hours from 6:00 a.m. yesterday (18) until 6:00 a.m. today (19). Police said that 1,261 persons and 833 vehicles entering the Western Province, as well as 1307 persons and 851 vehicles leaving the Province were inspected yesterday.

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who left the country to attend the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly, has arrived at the John F. Kennedy Airport in New York. The President and the delegation were welcomed by Mohan Peiris, Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the United Nations at the Airport. The UN General Assembly is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, (September 21) and Heads of State of several countries are already in New York to participate in the conference. The Foreign Ministerial level conference of the General Assembly will begin tomorrow (20). President Gotabaya Rajapaksa is scheduled to address Assembly on the second day of the conference.

Border Patrol has begun removing 14,800 migrants from a squalid camp set up underneath a Texas frontier bridge with the help of hundreds of cops and soldiers. The removal operation began hours after the Biden administration announced it planned to speed up deportation flights to Haiti – eventually increasing them to eight per day. Residents in Covid-19 hotspots will enjoy the same eased restrictions as the rest of Sydney within hours as New South Wales recorded 1083 Covid cases. The state also recorded 13 deaths, marking the deadliest day of the pandemic. NSW Premier Gladys Berejikjian welcomed the signs the curve could be flattening but warned now isn't the time to be complacent. Nine of the 13 deaths recorded on Sunday weren't vaccinated. Of the 1238 with cases in hospital, 234 are in intensive care with more than half on a ventilator.
