Chennai: DMK has won the Tamil Nadu election 2021 as the party and its allies have secured over 150 seats, dethroning the ruling AIADMK. A party needs to cross a majority mark of 118 to emerge as a winner in the 234-member Tamil Nadu assembly. With the DMK winning the assembly polls, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K. Palaniswami has sent his government’s resignation to Governor Banwarilal Purohit. On his part, Stalin thanked Palaniswami for his wishes and also requested the latter’s support and guidance for making Tamil Nadu the best state. Election for the 234-member Tamil Nadu assembly was held on April 6 and counting of votes began on Sunday.

The Parliament of Sri Lanka is scheduled to convene at 10.00 am tomorrow (May 04), with this week’s Parliament sittings limited to just two days. Accordingly, the party leaders had agreed at the meeting of the Committee on Parliamentary Business held recently to pass an order under the Sri Lanka Export Development Act, 04 notifications under the Excise Ordinance, the Value Added Tax (VAT) (Amendment) Bill and the Inland Revenue (Amendment) Bill from 10.00 am to 11.00 am, said the Secretary General of Parliament. The Secretary General Dhammika Dasanayake also said that no time would be allotted for oral questions of MPs and for questions under Standing Order 27(2). Subsequently, an adjournment debate on the current situation in the face of the Covid-19 would be held tomorrow from 11.00 am to 5.30 pm without a lunch break, Mr. Dasanayake further said. Meanwhile the debate on the Colombo Port City Economic Commission Bill is expected to be held on May 5th from 10.00 am to 8.00 pm during the entire day.

All new cases are associated with the New Year Covid-19 cluster. This brings the total of confirmed cases of COVID-19 recorded in the country to 112,798. A total of 106,960 of these Covid-19 cases are affiliated with the Minuwangoda, Peliyagoda, prisons and New Year clusters.

COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lankan authorities have urged the general public to refrain from experimenting with online ayurvedic recipes which claim to be useful to combat COVID-19. The State Ministry of Indigenous Medicine Promotion, Rural and Ayurveda Hospitals Development, and Community Health said it is paramount to have an understanding of the ingredients of an ayurvedic recipe and their use. The State Ministry urged the general public to always consult the State Ministry, Department of Ayurveda, Provincial Departments of Ayurveda, and other related agencies. It further went on to note that local medicines should only be used in accordance with the guidelines issued by the Health Ministry.

State Minister of Production, Supply and Regulation of Pharmaceuticals Prof. Channa Jayasumana says that the first batch of Russia’s Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccine is expected to arrive in Sri Lanka tonight. He stated that 15,000 doses of vaccine will arrive tonight as the first phase. Sri Lanka has decided to buy a total of 13 million doses of the Sputnik V vaccines from Russia. The National Medical Regulatory Authority on March 04 approved the emergency use of Russia’s Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccine in Sri Lanka. Later, on March 23, the Cabinet of Ministers gave the nod to purchase 7 million doses of Russia-made Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine for USD 69.65 million.

Issuing an advisory for heavy rain and severe lightning in several provinces and districts, the Department of Meteorology says showers or thundershowers will occur in most parts of the island during the evening or night. Very heavy rainfall about 150 mm can be expected at some places in Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces and heavy rainfall above 100 mm can be expected at some places in Western, Southern and North-western provinces. Thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are likely to occur in Sabaragamuwa, Central, Western and North-Central provinces and in Galle, Matara and Kurunegala districts, it said. There may be temporary localized strong winds during thundershowers. General public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by lightning activity.

This is the moment a desperate daughter gave her Covid-infected mother mouth-to-mouth resuscitation in a vain attempt to save her life at an overwhelmed hospital in India amid the country's brutal second wave of Covid. With no doctors in sight, one of the daughters gives her mother mouth-to-mouth while the other watches, though she was unable to save the elderly woman's life. Another 12 died on Saturday in a hospital in the capital New Delhi after it ran out of oxygen, reports said. It was posted with a hashtag noting that new Covid-19 cases in India had surpassed 400,000 a day. The national health ministry says states have 10 million vaccines stockpiled and 2 million more coming in the next three days.

The customers visiting the Provincial and District Labour Offices to claim Employees’ Provident Fund are requested to get an appointment date and time through contacting the relevant office through telephone. The telephone numbers and email addresses of these offices can be obtained through the official website of Department of Labour. “Furthermore, any matter concerned with Labour Laws may be forwarded to the Labour Office within the jurisdiction area in which your workplace was / is situated in, in the form of a written inquiry or written complaint,” the notice said. The public is further informed that written inquiries may be made from the various divisions located in the Head Office of the Department of Labour through the communication methods mentioned in the table below.

Indian bowling duo Varun Chakravarthy and Sandeep Warrier, from Cummins' Indian Premier League team the Kolkata Knight Riders, were confirmed cases on Monday. Cummins, 27, is now is isolation, along with his Australian teammate Ben Cuttings and the rest of the squad. It's understood that Cummins, whose IPL contract is worth approximately $3.1 million, is currently healthy and not experiencing any Covid-19 symptoms. The remainder of the Knight Riders squad, which includes England white ball captain Eoin Morgan, tested negative for Covid and are in isolation. Kolkata Knight Riders were slated to face Royal Challenges Bangalore in Ahmedabad on Monday night, but that game will not take place as scheduled.
