12m pensioners to be left worse off under plans to freeze triple lock due to furlough

This so-called "triple lock" has been in force ever since, ensuring pensioners don't lose out compared with the working age population or are made poorer if prices shoot up. The PM’s Press Secretary insisted there are "no plans to abolish" the triple lock - but refused to say if it could be suspended temporarily. A spokesman said: "On the triple lock, these are unique and challenging economic circumstances and we cannot hide from that. Suspending the triple lock could result in savings of £10billion over 48 months. "A rational approach would be to put the triple lock on hold and take a year-by-year judgment on how to treat pensioners fairly relative to other groups.
