3 Faces finds an oppressive small town, and that’s no mystery

They’re investigating a young girl’s apparent suicide. The girl sent a cellphone video of her desperate act to Jafari, but the recording leaves only frustrating clues about what happened. What they turn up is disturbing evidence of a land staunchly resistant to gender equality and modernity, and it struck a chord at the Cannes Film Festival, where 3 Faces shared the screenwriting prize with Happy as Lazzaro.
