500 families flee flooded villages

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY: More than 500 families in Butuan City, Agusan del Sur, were evacuated from their villages that were flooded as a result of heavy rains spawned by tropical storm "Dante" this week, the military said. A military report received here on Friday said 11 villages, mostly located in Butuan City's southern outskirts, were flooded, prompting the evacuation of 575 families. Lt. Angel Grace Sabelina, spokesman for the Philippine Army's 28th Infantry Battalion, based in Buenavista, Agusan del Norte, said relief, rescue and recovery operations started three days ago. "While some families returned to their houses, a number of evacuees remained at the evacuation centers assigned by the local government units," she added. Although Dante passed through Mindanao's eastern seaboard on June 1 without making a landfall, it dumped heavy rains on eastern Mindanao, flooding lowland areas.
