'Alien: Covenant' Falls Flat In China Day 2

Ridley Scott’s Alien: Covenant didn’t need to be a big hit in China to exceed its North American gross, but its weak Saturday performance portends a brief, rather lackluster run for the Hollywood import. The 20th Century Fox creature feature opened with a so-so $11.1 million on Friday, including midnight screenings, and earned even less on Saturday, dropping an unusually harsh 6 percent on its second day. To give this performance some context, Wonder Woman opened in China two weeks earlier with a 30 percent increase from Friday to Saturday. Although it was made for the relatively modest budget of $97 million (the prior film in the franchise, Prometheus, cost $130 million), Alien will struggle to earn a profit.
