The Congress said in a tweet: "With Diesel prices at an all-time and petrol prices at a 4-year high, we thought this was a rather cruel April Fool's day joke, PM Modi. In Calcutta, the petrol price is the highest since August 15, 2014, when it touched Rs 78.03. As a result, diesel prices had dipped on October 4, 2017 to Rs 56.89 per litre and petrol to Rs 68.38 per litre. The October 2017 excise duty cut cost the government Rs 26,000 crore in annual revenue and about Rs 13,000 crore during the remaining part of the current fiscal year. Between November 2014 and January 2016, the Centre raised excise duty on petrol and diesel on nine occasions to suck out the gains from plummeting global oil prices.
