Soldiers from the 21st division of the Somali army have arrived in areas along the Somali-Ethiopian border, where troops from an Ethiopian special regional police force attacked Somali nomads last Friday. The Liyu Police, from the Somali regional state of Ethiopia, have been regularly crossing over to the Somali side of the border and harassing residents there. On 20 December, pastoralist communities inhabiting border areas self-organized and engaged the Liyu Police in heavy fighting that left nearly 20 people dead. Soldiers from the army, who arrived at Boran’ad village yesterday evening, have now succeeded in calming the situation, negotiating a successful prisoner swap according to officials. The Galmudug regional state says it has been working with authorities on the Ethiopian side of the border to calm the situation.
