Asked to bat first, Bangladesh openers Saif Hasan and Mohammad Naim got off to a brilliant start with a 120-run stand. In reply, Sri Lanka lost opener Pathum Nissanka in just the second over as off-spinner Afif Hossain made the breakthrough. Bangladesh took regular wickets and kept up the pressure on the Lankan batting order as the home side registered 130 for the loss of six wickets at the halfway stage.
