As Britain at last begins to emerge from the pandemic, our country desperately needs a spirit of unity and solidarity. But the inflammatory row at Batley Grammar over a teacher’s use of the Prophet Muhammad’s image in a religious studies class threatens to undermine social cohesion – not just in Yorkshire but across Britain. Whatever the truth about the image, however, nothing can justify the climate of brutal intimidation which has subsequently enveloped the school. Even though more than 70 per cent of its pupil intake are Muslims of south Asian heritage, Batley Grammar is not in any sense an Islamic institution. In fact, Batley Grammar has a responsibility to promote dialogue, critical thinking and openness so its pupils are equipped to become informed and inquiring citizens in a democratic society.
