Presuming at least halfway decent legs, it’s a moderate win for Dwayne Johnson (it’s one of his bigger solo openings, behind only San Andreas) and for the maligned video game sub-genre. It had a solid three weeks between itself and WB’s big late Easter release Ready Player One. But Ready Player One remains an overseas juggernaut and Rampage will snag the kiddie audience for the next 1.5 weeks. Rampage is both (by default) my pick for the best video game movie ever and the best-reviewed video game adaptation on Rotten Tomatoes. Two halfway decent video game flicks in just under a month deserves a special sort of prize.
