Brief New Year’s thaw expected in Calgary

CALGARY—Howling winds tore up Calgary’s streets and parking lots on Sunday morning, along with a brutally cold -20 C wind chill. But the city will get a New Year’s grace period before winter hits its stride. According to Environment Canada’s forecast, Calgary was sitting at around -9 C on Sunday morning, although it is expected to fall to -14 C in the afternoon. Gusts of wind – around 50 km/hr – and a 60 per cent chance of flurries will make for blustery conditions throughout the day. At its worst, the wind chill is expected to be -23 C. And Monday isn’t looking much better: a high of -7 C and a wind chill of -20 C in the morning, dropping to -12 C in the afternoon.
