On the eve of the UK's exit from the EU the Grand Place in the centre of the city was lit up in the blue, red and white of the union flag. Gilles and Catherine Fartek, both 58, and originally from France but living in Brussels clutched both UK and Belgian flags. Philippe Close organised the event to celebrate the « long friendship between the Brit’s and the people of Brussels. He said: "no matter what happens the thousands of Brits who live in Brussels will stay Bruxellois." Evelyne, 60, and Jean-Paul Vlasschaert, 59, from Brussels had come to “say goodbye to our British friends”.
