Vancouver’s favourite rugby tournament has pulled in a serious piece of hardware. The HSBC Canada Sevens, which will see the fourth edition run this coming March, was named Friday as Tournament of the Year on the ten-stop World Rugby Sevens Series for the 2017-18 season. The Canada Sevens earned the top score in five of the categories. Jamie Levchuk, who has headed tournament operations for the Canada Sevens since day one and recently had all of Rugby Canada’s events placed under his authority, pointed to the work of staff, volunteers and the local business community for the tournament’s behind-the-scenes success. Tournaments have bid to be part of the next four-year cycle, which starts with the 2019-20 season and with this award, it’s hard to see the Vancouver event not continuing on as one of the ten world series events.
