A rich foundation started by ex-Cargill CEO Whitney MacMillan was a regular donor to right-wing causes, but has discontinued its funding of political organizations since its founder’s death in 2020, IRS documents show. Some conservative political organizations also counted on the WEM Foundation as a regular source of funding. The foundation made its last donation to the Charlemagne Institute in 2020 — the year Whitney MacMillan died — and to the Center of the American Experiment in 2021. Representatives of the WEM Foundation and the Center of the American Experiment did not immediately return requests for comment. The WEM Foundation made more than $430 million by selling Cargill stock, according to the 2022 tax return.
