City steps back from anti-racism advisory board to get more feedback from community groups

EDMONTON—Action to create an anti-racism advisory board in Edmonton has been tabled until the city gets more community feedback. Citing the Alberta government’s recent anti-racism plan released in June, and federal and provincial funding for similar initiatives at the community level, city officials advised against a municipal anti-racism advisory board at the community and public services committee meeting Wednesday. Councillor Scott McKeen said more feedback from the community, such as the Indigenous population in Edmonton, could guide the conversation around creating an advisory board to fight racism in the city. A local advisory board could take a more hands-on approach, Chaudhry suggested, tackling problems with city policies and services, but should feed into the dialogue happening at the provincial level.
