Civil servant numbers heading the wrong way

Wallis WangMore than 3,700 civil servants quit in the fiscal year 2021-22, the highest since the handover in 1997 and more than twice the previous year. Among the 3,734 who quit this year were 10 administrative officers of directorate grade and 22 nondirectorate administrative officers. Federation of Civil Service Unions chairman Leung Chau-ting yesterday told The Standard that many civil servants left to join the private sector for higher pay and lighter workload. He also said civil servants now have a lot of extra work amid the pandemic. Leung said many government departments are suffering from manpower shortage and some are asking older civil servants to postpone retirement.
