Harry’s impassioned speech last night revealed the pain behind his decision to step away from the royal family and how the deal they struck was not the one he and Meghan imagined they would make. But there is another way of looking at the result: that Meghan has come out with more than Harry. When the couple first announced they intended to step back from royal duties, it was clear they had in mind some kind of halfway house. Their new website, which appeared after they dropped their bombshell, talked about the couple being “able to continue to carry out their duties for Her Majesty the Queen” while achieving financial independence. That idea, they have been firmly told, is a complete non-starter.
