At present, Tar Heels head football coach Mack Brown is continuing to prepare his just over 100 college football players for the team’s September 12 season-opener against Syracuse University. Yet, the economic value of playing college football during a pandemic should not be the essence of the decision-making process, at least for public colleges. Throughout much of the world, public colleges seem to recognize the value of affording athletic opportunities to students. Public colleges need to start doing a lot better in meeting their true mission.
