However, there are still signs of life at the grass roots, if the massive initial response to a crowdfunded animation project from one of Kickstarter’s most successful creators is any indication. Iron Circus Comics, the enterprise of Chicago-based creator Spike Trotman, has raised nearly $1.5 million on Kickstarter for comic and graphic novel projects. It features the ongoing adventures of a cast of “tough dames, crooked cops, rum-runners, and wide-eyed ingenues” who frequent the (original) Roaring 20s speakeasy Lackadaisy. “I first found Lackadaisy over a decade ago, when Tracy had first begun the comic.,” said Trotman. And both fans and producers of original animated content might want to take a longer look at crowdfunding as a near-term solution to satisfy public demand for new entertainment.
