MANILA, Philippines — Palay production hit a record high of 20.06 million metric tons in 2023, according to the Department of Agriculture (DA). Data from the Philippine Statistics Authority showed that palay output was 1.5 percent higher than the 19.76 million MT recorded in 2022. Rice imports declined to 3.5 million MT in 2023 from 3.8 million MT in 2022. The Philippines has a total rice consumption of 13.5 million MT annually, plus 1.85 million MT for a 50-day buffer.
