The Department of Justice will be appealing the acquittal of eight people in the August 31 rioting case. The department said it will appeal by way of case stated against the acquittal judgment of the eight defendants. The DoJ stated that District Judge Sham Siu-man had failed to consider and analyze all the evidence targeting the defendants in the case. On October 31, Sham acquitted seven people of rioting during a protest in Wan Chai and Causeway Bay on August 31 last year. Sham stated that even if the defendants were dressed in black with protective gear, it did not prove that they participated in the rioting.
