Cars, vans and lorries used 27.4 billion litres of the fuel in the 11 months to the end of November — down by almost 2 per cent from a year earlier. The drop coincides with a fall in the number of vans and HGVs – which are almost completely dependent on diesel – being driven on Britain’s roads over the past 12 months. Difficult pre-Brexit trading conditions have been blamed, with van mileage down by 1.4 per cent.
