For most of its existence, the environmental movement has relied on what’s called unpaid media, which means positive coverage from newspapers and magazines. As someone who wrote the book on the environmental movement — literally — I’ve been around the block on this one. The environmental movement is full of folks who like to say, “I’m not a people person.” You know what? This isn’t the environmental movement of Aldo Leopold or Rachel Carson. The current political and publishing moment offers the environmental movement an opening to rebuild its connection to the American people.
