If you want to plant a tree in your garden, and want it to be an easy, trouble-free tree experience, these are the ones I would recommend. Trees that do what they are supposed to do — flower, produce berries, provide autumn colour — and do it well, year after year. Plant them well, soaking the rootball first, then take care to stake them securely; at this time of year the foliage adds considerable wind resistance. Check after windy weather that the rootball hasn’t waggled loose in the hole. If so, firm it in again with your foot and add a watering-canful of water.
